A 21-year-old Somali has admitted to trashing the reception area of the Floriana Health Centre last week but insisted that he was not mentally sane during the incident.

The incident took place on 8 April at around 7pm. The accused damaged a glass partition at the health centre as well as a number of computers. The health centre had to be closed for a number of hours for repair work.

Abdimalik Ahmed Mohammed was charged before Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera with causing willful damage to the health centre, slightly injuring Jesmond Mifsud, disturbing the peace and throwing stones at the health centre.
He told the Magistrate that everything mentioned in the charges was true but said he was not of sound mind at the time. The accused said he had no fixed address and was currently unemployed.

The court heard how a medical doctor had certified the man as being fit for prosecution. The court, however, appointed a psychiatrist to evaluate Mr Mohammed and testify in 5 May.

Inspector Jeffrey Scicluna noted that the man was uncooperative and had caused a scene at the police HQ when he was brought in for questioning. The man refused to be aided by a lawyer.

Bail was denied and the accused was returned to the forensic ward at Mount Carmel Hospital.
