Parliament approves amendment allowing 14-year-old foreigners to participate in target shooting

Parliament have passed an amendment allowing foreigners over 14-years old to practice target shooting with airguns only or by a firearm of a different kind for sports purposes provided the Commissioner for Police temporarily authorises the person in question to use a firearm for target shooting.

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela presented the bill to bring foreigners in Malta onto a level playing field with locals.

Minister Carmelo Abela stressed the importance of seriousness when handling guns, however mentioned that abroad, youths all around the world are practicing shooting as a sport, and mentioned that one youth under-16, yet over 14, will be participating in the upcoming shooting grand prix that will take place in Malta.

"Our laws already give weight to discipline when using guns, and my appeal is for all those who are collectors, as well as those who aren't however own a gun, have their guns registered," he said.

PN Whip David Agius welcomed the amendment, stressing that shooting is a popular sport. He spoke of the need for more upgraded shooting facilities on the island, and highlighted the problem with finding such a place or expanding those already present.

With regard to shooting ranges, he said the Prime Minister might want to tweak his no development on ODZ pledge in this regard.
