A dog that was found dead with a plastic bag wrapped around its head in Rabat appears to have died of suffocation.

The yellow-coated dog, which appears to be a female, was reportedly found by a girl who alerted a neighbour.

The picture of the dead dog was uploaded to Facebook by Doris Micallef, who said the dog appeared to have been suffocated.

There are no visible signs of injury on the animal. 

Asked for a comment, the parliamentary secretariat responsible for animal welfare said that the case was not reported to the authorities.

In such case, people are urged to make contact with the Animal Welfare Department immediately for investigations to start, with the first step being the checking of the microchip, which is required by law.

The department appealed for any assistance from the public on this particular case.
