Former Labour candidate Reno Borg has been appointed as Arbiter for Financial Services.
Dr Borg was sworn in during a ceremony held on Thursday. He is the first arbiter in the Officer of the Arbiter for Financial Services. The role was set up by Act XVI of 2016.
The office has the power to mediate, investigate and rule on complaints by consumers against any supplier of financial services. “The arbiter is totally independent and impartial from all parties,” the government said in a statement.
Dr Reno Borg has served as a lawyer for the past 32 years. He graduated from the University of Malta and furthered his studies at the London School of Economics and Oxford.
Along the years he also worked in the Office of the Prime Minister and the Office of the Attorney General. He was also chairman of several state entities and also served as arbiter under the Social Security Act. He is also a lecturer of civil law at the University.
AG Peter Grech and Finance Minister Edward Scicluna attended the swearing-in ceremony.
