Right to vote: Opposition continues to attack country’s institutions – government

The government has accused the Opposition of mounting a continuous attack on the country’s institutions in spite of positive results being obtained at international level.

In a statement, the government said it was doing this to undermine the government’s work at creating investment from which families will benefit.

The IIP, the government said, is the only citizenship programme that is approved by the European Commission and is monitored by an independent regulator approved by both sides of the House of Representatives. Income generated from the scheme is being used in projects aimed to improve people’s lifestyles.

The Opposition knows that anyone obtaining Maltese citizenship has the right to request to have his or her name added to the Electoral Register if a set of requirements are met. It is the Electoral Commission that regulates the process, the government said.

If political parties believe that the Electoral register includes names of people who should not be there, then a court case needs to be filed for the names to be removed. What the court decides is then implemented, the government said.

“There is no scandal and no corruption. It is only the Opposition that is ready to open fire against the country’s institutions to cause damage to successful programmes,” the government said.
