43-year-old sentenced to nine years imprisonment and fined €15,000 over heroin trafficking charges

Thursday, 2 June 2016, 17:46 Last update: about 10 years ago

43 year-old Christopher Borg was sentenced to nine years in prison and fined €15,000 after pleading guilty to charges of association in order to traffic heroin, importation of heroin, and possession of heroin which was not for his personal use.

The guilty plea was in order to avoid trial by jury and the sentence was agreed upon by all parties after an exercise of sentence bargaining.

The court found Borg guilty of all three charges and subsequently also ordered the accused to pay court fees for appointing court experts amounting to €4,131 as well as for Mr Borg's assets to be seized. Also, unless the Attorney General asks for the drugs in connection to the case to be used as evidence in any follow-up cases against third parties, they will all be destroyed after 15 days.

The case was presided by Madam Justice Dr Edwina Grima while Mr Borg's defence was led by Dr Jason Azzopardi and Dr Kris Busietta.
