17-year-old Bulgarian pickpocket caught and given suspended sentence

A 17-year-old Bulgarian girl admitted to charges relating to simple theft of a wallet, containing €175.

The police had said that she didn't cooperate in the case, however the defence argued that she has now admitted to the crime.

The prosecution said that CCTV caught her approach a couple and put her hand in the woman’s handbag, but she didn’t take anything. As the salespersons were discussing the course of action they should take, the accused stole a wallet from an elderly woman’s handbag and ran off. A chase then ensued and she threw the wallet away. The police then caught her.

The girl was crying throughout the proceedings. She received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

Lawyer Simon Micallef Stafrace appeared as legal aid, inspector Priscilla Caruana Lee appeared for the prosecution and Magistrate Audrey Demicoli presided over the case.
