AWAS worker assaulted by Ghanian migrant, Magistrate Joe Mifsud orders six month imprisonment

Wednesday, 10 August 2016, 15:12 Last update: about 9 years ago

Magistrate Joe Mifsud today harshly criticised a Ghanian migrant, imprisoning him for six months over assaulting and threatening an Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers (AWAS) worker.

In addition to this, Magistrate Mifsud also ordered Aziz Issah, the Ghanian migrant, to be deported once his six month sentence is complete.

Mr Issah was charged with assaulting and threatening Ann Marie Pisani, Sam Mohamed and their minor daughter on February 3, Marsa. He was also charged with breaching public order.

The accused was found in contempt of court after he failed to appear for his original hearing, scheduled on 7 March. As a result, he was fined €250.

In his judgment, Magistrate Mifsud stressed how inappropriate it is for AWAS workers to be threatened and insulted. He praised the workers and condemned all those who prevent the workers from carrying out their duties.
