Work on the building in Old Treasury Street, that was given to the Valletta local council to use as its offices, is underway, Culture Mnister Owen Bonnici said today.
During a press conference, the Minister spoke about the building's central position in Valletta. He also praised the Council's initiative to also offer community services. "In fact the Council plans on having a day centre in the building, as well as a clinic".
The aim, the minister said, is that the part of the building that will be used by the council will be ready by the end of the year, while works in order for the additional services to be offered will conclude in 2017.
He also referred to another project within the building, the construction of a lift making the National Library accessible for everyone, including persons with disability.
He said that through such projects, government is looking at preserving Maltese heritage.
