Training for disciplined forces to be researched, accredited and of higher level - minister

Opportunity, training and quality for a career in a Disciplined Force. These are the foundations heading the leadership of the Academy for Disciplined Forces at ta’ Kandja after  the law that lead to its legal set up came into force recently.

This was stated by the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Carmelo this morning, while addressing the first meeting of the Academy Board that will serve as the highest governing force of the entity.

Minister Abela remarked that Government’s vision for the Academy is to create accredited training seeing that a role in a Disciplined Force will be perceived professional leading to progress in the service provided to society.

He explained that in conformity with electoral programme, the missions is modernisation of the Forces that goes beyond the acquisition of new equipment but will also include the strengthening of human resources skills. Hence, proactive forces will continue to be built able to address the current challenges in the field of security, while preparing for developing future trends.

The Minister said that the Board chaired by Professor Tanya Sammut-Bonnici comprises representatives from the Armed Forces, Police Force, Civil Protection, Corradino Correctional Facility together with two members appointed by the Minister. There’s also representatives from the University of Malta and Mcast.

He noted that the functions and duties of the board are to develop direction, strategy and identity for the Academy. The board will provide advice to the Commandant of the Academy, Mr Joseph Cachia to achieve excellent levels in the standards of training programmes. The board will also assist the Director of Studies, Mr Paul Caruana to ensure that the Academy will follow the requisited by the National Commission for Higher and Further Education and the Malta Qualificatons Council. This will establish appropriate procedures for the evaluation and certification of the lecturers and determine courses and programmes in consultation with the Academic Committee of the entity.

The Minister concluded by expressing his satisfaction for the beginning of this new chapter in the level of provided training to the 4,500 members of Disciplined Forces.
