Deputy Central Bank Governor Alfred Mifsud was not present in court today in a case filed against him relating to certain documents that were once in the possession of his former partner, Anna Zelbst.

His lawyer Paul Lia stated that Mr Mifsud was returning from a trip to New York. He also claimed that his client had been notified with the hearing date, however was not notified with the charges. His lawyer said that “we aren’t even sure what the case is about”.

The charge against Mr Mifsud is ragion fattasi, which loosely translates into taking the law into his own hands, and surrounds documents that were once in possession of Anna Zelbst. However the Dr Albert Libreri, on behalf of Anna Zelbst, is claiming that Alfred Mifsud stole the documents belonging to her on the night between 19 and 20 June this year. The nature of the documents was not mentioned in the court room.

Parte Civile attorney Albert Libreri, on behalf of Anna Zelbst, asked for the case to be withdrawn and refiled with a new charge of theft, or that a correction to the existing charge be made.

The case is being heard by Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo.

Last June, Mr Mifsud had filed a police report for defamation against his former partner Anna Zelbst following reports appearing on Daphne Caruana Galizia’s website.
