Lauren Aquilina, a UK-based Maltese artist, has decided to suspend her successful musical career at only age 21.

She announced through a Facebook post on her page saying that her musical career has taken a strain on her mental health, causing her to suffer from depression.

"I've known for a good few months now that this 'Lauren Aquilina' album was not only going to be the first, but also the last," she writes in a lengthy Facebook post to her 70,000 followers.

"The cons now outweigh the pros and I've been pretty unhappy for a long time. I still have a lot of faith in myself as a songwriter, and am going to continue to pursue that but I will no longer be writing for myself or performing live under my own name. I know some of you will see this as a sad thing, but for me it's incredibly exciting and relieving to be able to leave something behind that no longer makes me happy."

Despite saying that she doesn't see herself doing this for the foreseeable future, the young singer said that this not mean she will never sing again.

"Although this industry isn't an easy ride for anyone, the truth is I'm not sure I was ever cut out for the pressure of being an artist. When I realised what a negative impact my career was having on my mental health, I realised something needed to change."

Excited for what the future holds, Lauren Aquilina hopes she can help others deal with by setting up a blog.
