Kirkop school students construct reading garden out of recycled materials

Friday, 4 November 2016, 17:16 Last update: about 8 years ago

Students from the St Benedict Secondary School in Kirkop will benefit from a new reading garden made by the students themselves. This was inaugurated by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo and Labour MEP Miriam Dalli.

Dr Dalli explained how the initiative, which incorporates sustainability and innovation, aims to bring together the policy-making of the European Parliament with the daily education of local students.

The project chosen revolved around the setting up of a reading garden from recycled materials such as tyres, wood and wires. Several students who worked on this project will now be given the opportunity to visit the European Institutions in Brussels in the coming weeks.

“Through this project, the students managed to put into practice the concept of circular economy, and exploited resources which were going to be dumped. The students, some of which were at risk of early school leaving and following an Alternative Learning Programme, displayed what they are capable to do in a different environment – this will be enjoyed by their colleagues for the coming years,” Dr Dalli said.

The project also entailed a video production portraying different stages of the initiative, which will be shared on social media to encourage similar projects.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo lauded this initiative and said that such projects are crucial to prepare the students when they join the labour market.

Minister Bartolo and MEP Miriam Dalli showed their gratitude to the school’s management for their collaboration, and the teachers who assisted the students during this project.
