They say that a picture is worth a thousand words.

Well, this one certainly does.

It was taken last year at the G7 summit held in Bavaria.

As one can see, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is the only leader in the picture who is not waving. The others – US president Barack Obama, French President Francois Hollande, former UK PM David Cameron and Italian PM Matteo Renzi – are waving at the cameras.

Merkel was yesterday confirmed as the leader of the German Conservative Party, while her colleagues in the photo have already left politics, or are about to.

Cameron departed after losing the Brexit referendum, Obama will be leaving next month to be replaced by Donald Trump as US president, Hollande has declared he has no interest in contesting the next French presidential election, and Renzi has announced his resignation after losing the constitutional referendum result last Sunday.
