Businessman files multiple libel suits against Malta Today over FTS scandal reports

Businessman Sandro Ciliberti has filed multiple libel suits, including criminal libel proceedings, against Malta Today after he was implicated by the newspaper in its reporting on the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools scandal.

Mr Ciliberti was named by Malta Today in connection with the ongoing saga involving Edward Camilleri, a former canvasser of Education Minister Evarist Bartolo.

Seven libel suits were filed against Malta Today managing editor Saviour Balzan, journalist Tim Diacono, editor Matthew Vella and deputy editor Miriam Dalli and well as criminal libel proceedings.

Malta Today claimed today that Ciliberti has been interrogated "in connection to tenders awarded to him, and about his association with Edward Caruana and L & A Camilleri, a firm owned by Piju Camilleri."

Through his lawyer Dr Marco Ciliberti, Sandro Ciliberti reiterated that, contrary to what the newspaper has reported, he has never been “investigated by the police and further that he has no connection or association with Mr. Camilleri and/or the firm L&A Camilleri and that additional libel proceedings shall be instituted in due course.”

Mr Ciliberti described the Malta Today reports as “defamatory” and “incorrect.”

He said reporting about his companies was incorrect and that neither Mr Ciliberti nor his company had been awarded any direct orders by the FTS.

The company, Al Nibras, “has not been hand delivered any cheques by Mr. Edward Caruana. All payments due to Al Al Nibras for Science & Technology Limited and Hagman Limited by the Foundation have been collected from the premises of the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools against a signature on a record book retained by the Foundation for the purpose.”

Mr Ciliberti also denied having made contact with the Education Minister.

“Despite allegations of police investigations being underway, which are clearly being instigated by Malta Today in every publication, Sandro Ciliberti and/or Al Nibras for Science & Technology and/or Hangman Limited have not been contacted by the Malta police on the matter to-date,” Mr Ciliberti added.
