Casino Maltese’s noon mark sundial restored

Monday, 6 February 2017, 15:04 Last update: about 9 years ago

The Casino Maltese has recently restored the noon mark sundial on the club's Republic Street facade. The restoration works were carried out by conservator Agatha Grima and her professional team.

The restored sundial was constructed by Rev. Fr George Fenech in 1976 to replace the one that was lost when the facade was destroyed through enemy action during World War II.

There is evidence that successive sundials have graced this facade since the beginning of the 18th century.

This most recent version has particular features such as an analemma divided into twelve sections representing the months of the year as well as the signs of the Zodiac.

The history of the different sundials is being researched and will feature in the forthcoming book on the history of the Casino Maltese.
