UOM STEAM School workshops on building and honing communication skills

Tuesday, 14 February 2017, 08:37 Last update: about 8 years ago

As our dependency on science and technology grows, public engagement with science becomes increasingly important. This has lead to concerns over the accessibility of research within everyday society, but one thing that can be done is to communicate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) effectively.

STEAM School at the University of Malta is offering free activities for all undergraduate and postgraduate students to build up their communication skills and practice them to hone them to perfection. The focus of these activities will be to develop experiments to deliver in local secondary schools. Those interested can apply on http://bit.ly/steam-malta-2017

The first event will be a workshop on how to weave creative and engaging narrative to communicate scientific and technical concepts. During this workshop, participants will practice these skills, developing each demonstration or experiment within groups - skills that are highly sought after by future employers.

The second event will be a workshop on how to deliver an interactive activity to a small audience. Participants will practice the activities developed in the previous workshop. These are aimed to encourage secondary schools students to use inquiry-based learning to understand STEM concepts. Afterwards, STEAM school will be visiting at least two secondary schools.

Anyone interested in either of the above should apply by the 16 February. All dates can be found in the application form. The skills learnt through these activities are highly sought for by employers while giving secondary school students a memorable day.

STEAM School is part-funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework of the European Commission and by the Erasmus+ programme Key Action 2 Strategic Partnerships of the European Union
