Government says new media law will not impose registering by citizens to comment online

Saturday, 18 February 2017, 10:12 Last update: about 10 years ago

The government today said that the new media law presented last Tuesday will not impose the registering of citizens who want to submit comments online.

In a statement, the government said it is following the public discussion on the new law, which will eliminate criminal libel and introduce new systems of mediation in civil cases.

The government said that there is no direct or indirect intention to introduce a system making it obligatory for citizens to register themselves to be able to comment online. This is a spin created by the Nationalists, the government said.

What the new law is proposing is that, just as much as editors of newspapers, television and radio stations need to be registered, so should editors of news portals.
