Tonio Fenech to be one of the main witnesses in Camilleri’s traffic accident appeal

Thursday, 2 March 2017, 19:09 Last update: about 8 years ago

Former PN minister Tonio Fenech has asked to give his testimony in the appeal case filed by Dorianne Camilleri after she was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. Ms Camilleri was found guilty of involuntarily killing Alfred Zahra, an elderly man in May 2011 in Rabat, in a traffic accident and seriously injured his sister.

Mr Fenech, during an interview with Xarabank said that, six years ago he had witnessed the accident and helped the injured persons; however he was never asked to give his version of events before the magisterial inquiry.

Teacher Dorianne Camilleri's court judgment led to a public outcry, with many posting on social media that it was not her fault that this accident happened. The court had no choice but to give Ms Camilleri a jail term; however Justice Minister Owen Bonnici presented an amendment in the Criminal Code, which gives the magistrate the prerogative to decide what type of sentence should be given.

Mr Fenech said that when he heard the court sentence and watched Friday's programme in which Ms Camilleri made an appeal for witnesses to come forward, Mr Fenech said he wants to give evidence.

At the time of the accident Mr Fenech was travelling in his ministerial car. He said that he had seen a van which was in front of Ms Camilleri's car turning into a side road. The elderly brother and sister crossed the road in front of the van and Ms Camilleri had no time to brake and evade them because the van was obstructing her vision.

Mr Fenech told Xarabank that the teacher could not speed because there was the van in front of her.
