A bus has caught fire in Birzebbuga, the police have confirmed.

No one was injured as the passengers on board managed to leave the vehicle before the fire engulfed it, although the bus driver was treated for shock.

The bus was completely destroyed in the blaze, which took place at 6pm.

Malta Public Transport said in a statement it is cooperating with the competent authorities and will also be appointing an independent investigator to determine the cause of this fire.

The company thanked the driver of the bus who immediately escorted the passengers to a safe distance, and to the Police and Civil Protection officials who responded promptly and efficiently.

Civil Protection Department personnel were on site to put out the fire.

The police are investigating the cause of the fire.
