Turkey deported 40 Holstein cows in retribution for the Dutch denial of landing to foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Saturday, New Europe reports.

The civic diplomacy initiative was taken by the Turkey’s Association of Red Meat Producers. The 40 Dutch cows are in a truck and on their way to the Netherlands.

The President of the organization, Belent Tunc, told Hurriyet Daily News that if the Dutch does not take the cows back, they will slaughter them and distribute the cuts to the poor.

The Holstein breed originates from Northern Holland and is one of the most common species in the world. However, Belent Tunc made clear that the alien breed has been “causing troubles” in Turkey.

Meanwhile, Turkish Minister for European Union Affairs, Omer Celik, maintains that recent events will not hurt business ties with the Netherlands. Speaking to Reuters, Celik said he was confident that tourists and the private sector are not likely to be influenced by recent events.

The Netherlands is the 10th biggest export market for Turkey and the single most significant European source of Foreign Direct Investment in Turkey with a 16% share  of the total. The Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim is now in a hard spot since his ship-owning family allegedly has over thirty ships in the Dutch registry, flying the flag of the Netherlands.
