Customs officials on duty at the Malta Parcel Post Office discovered a parcel full of cash while screening packages arriving from China.

The parcel in question was declared to be a Home and Garden item. The item's shape raised suspicions and was set aside to be screened using the department's Xray machine. Following the screening, the item was deemed as high risk due to abnormalities seen on the scan, and the decision to physically check the item was taken.

Upon opening the parcel, five bundles of cash in $100 denominations were discovered. Each bundle contained $10,000, for a total amount of $50,000 (€46,240).

The Customs Department handed over the bundles to the Police Economic Crime Section for further investigation, where it had to be established whether the cash is genuine or counterfeit. The receiver of the packet has been arraigned in order to help in the investigations.
