Thursday, 23 March 2017, 11:08 Last update: about 8 years ago

Gozo's Ċittadella is joining other monuments and landmarks in around 7,000 cities from all over the world that are switching off lights between 8.30pm and 9.30pm or are participating in other initiatives next Saturday in a bid to raise awareness on important environmental issues. This was said in a press statment issued by the Ministry of Gozo.

Millions of people around the world join this initiative to create awareness on the usage of clean energy in order to reduce harmful emissions leaving a negative effect on the climate and the atmosphere. In conjunction with this initiative Gozo Minister Anton Refalo said that Ċittadella is not participating in this initiative just as a symbolic gesture. The floodlighting system of the bastions is switched off every day in the early hours of the morning on a permanent basis, so that it will contribute towards the significant reduction of emissions throughout the year.

Through this initiative and other initiatives to reduce energy consumption, Ċittadella will be reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emissions by 50 tons annually. Minister Refalo said that this initiative achieves one of the targets of the EU co-financed Ċittadella restoration project, namely that of using efficient energy sources which reduce the carbon footprint.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of Earth Hour all over the world.
