Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Carmelo Abela received European Commissioner for the Security Union Julian King, for talks on the current issues related to European security and possible new work strands that could be explored to reflect the evolving nature of security threats.

During their meeting, which was held at the Ministry in Valletta, the Commissioner and the Minister focused on issues such as information sharing and exchange, counter-terrorism, cybercrime, radicalisation, the fight against illegal firearms trafficking, as well as e-evidence and encryption.

“Security has been very high on the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU’s agenda,” Minister Abela remarked. “We will continue striving for concrete progress to be achieved on proposals that address regional and global challenges, while defending the values that underpin the very existence of our Union.”

Commissioner King said: “I would like to thank Minister Abela and the Government of Malta for the positive contribution they are making to pushing forward the Security Union agenda under their Presidency.”
