As the election date nears, mudslinging between the political parties becomes evident, and this might hinder the local financial sector's reputation, Finance Minister Edward Scicluna said today.

He was delivering his speech to a Finance Malta conference.

Professor Scicluna said one would expect professional people to keep their heads high and protect the financial industry.

He said that Malta has a very good reputation in this sector, and has managed to protect its tax system and standards are being maintained.

"It is sad to see that the local discussions and political fights spill over to the international media," he said.

Earlier this week, Minister Scicluna flew to Germany to speak with the German media, following damning reports from journalists reporting on the Panama Papers scandal.

"A lot of spin stories are appearing abroad. They are  fake news," he told said.
