The Social Innovation Challenge: Enable and Engage was a competition launched last year encouraging the public to come up with innovative ideas for the elderly and people with disability. The competition organised by the Edward de Bono Institute at the University of Malta in collaboration with the Parliamentary Secretariat for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing was sponsored by Mapfre Middlesea and Mapfre MSV Life. Parliamentary Secretary for Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing, Dr Justyne Caruana, awarded the winning entry to Dr John Mary Farrugia. Dr Farrugia came up with an innovative mobile phone designed specifically to assist the elderly in their daily life.

Addressing the event, Dr Caruana said that government is always open to new ideas that lead to greater efficiency and effectiveness and that allow the elderly and people with disability to better integrate within society.

Dr Caruana thanked the Edward De Bono Institute and main sponsors Mapfre Middlesea and Mapfre MSV Life for their participation in the event.

"We are constantly looking for ways to engage within the community and we are happy to collaborate with The Edward Debono Institute to encourage innovation, which is an important value within the Mapfre Group," said Norman Mifsud, chief officer HR & Corporate Services at Mapfre MSV Life. This sponsorship is part of the CSR Programme of the Mapfre Group in Malta, in which the Group helps out the community through sponsorship and voluntary sessions.
