Watch: If you abstain, you will open door to PN - Muscat; Keith Schembri makes an appearance

Kevin Schembri Orland Thursday, 1 June 2017, 18:16 Last update: about 8 years ago

Embattled chief of staff Keith Schembri, absent during all of Labour's election campaign, made an appearance at the last activity being held by Labour this evening.

He was seen on stage (photo above, Schembri is on PM's right) before Joseph Muscat addressed Labour supporters for one last time before Saturday's vote.

Schembri is at the centre of two magisterial inquiries started after Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil presented what he said was evidence of kickbacks and payments. A third inquiry has Prime Minister Joseph Muscat being investigated after it was reported that his wife is the owner of a company in Panama.

In his address at the last Labour Party mass meeting, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat urged people to vote, saying that an abstention will open the doors to a PN government.

Addressing the crowd at Hal Far, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said: "what emotion I feel as I stand here before you today."

"Today is the last day of this government's leadership, and we are giving you back a better country. It is the emotion of those who know the work we did, when we inherited a country that wanted to move away from mediocrity, a country that people were told nothing could happen, that  factories had to leave and that pensions and the minimum wage could not improve. We inherited this situation, and we are giving back a country where there is more work, less taxes, better pensions, a higher minimum wage, more civil rights which are better for everyone."

"I know that we have again given back the country to the people, a country which contrary to four years ago when parents doubted whether their children would have the opportunities they had, a country where every parent knows their children will be better off than we are."

"Over the past weeks we lived through a situation of huge contrast, a clear difference between those who made politics a game of who could mudsling the most, where the only proposal they made was of lies and inventions. That is not the politics I believe in."

He spoke of people he has had conversations with, and mentioned a person with disability who has finally found work. This is the politics I believe in. He mentioned other similair situations, including LGBTIQ couples and Civil Unions.

"I was simply the instrument that implemented the change you gave me the mandate to do. The greatest honour you gave me was allowing me to serve you."

"This Saturday, we must make a choice. A choice as to whether we stop halfway down the road or keep moving forward, a choice whether we stop here and go back to mediocrity, or keep moving down the road."

"It is a choice, not one simply about party. It is a choice between who admits they make mistakes. We admit it and we learn from it. But we also admit that we have done a lot, a lot of good. On the other side there are those who believe they are perfect and don't recognise the mistakes of the past."

He said that four years ago Simon Busuttil was tied in negativity. "Over the past four weeks how negativity is everything for the other side. They offered nothing. We have superior proposals and everyone recognises this."

"All he does is speak negatively, but on the other side there is us, who truly believe this country will move forward, where for us positivity is the order of the day. This is the choice."

"Others spent 25 years speaking and did little. Four years ago we dreamt, and there were those who told us it would be impossible to reduce taxes, to increase pensions and offer free childcare. Four years later we are here, and I can tell you that we did this."

He said that the youth are the energy of the PL movement, and again repeated that government is handing the country back better than when the PL was voted in four years ago.

He said that the country cannot be allowed to fall in the hands of the most unstable couple in Maltese politics, and that the Prime Minister cannot be hostage to a person who says one thing in the morning and another in the evening.

He said that the PL not only has energy, but now also have experience leading the country. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to go out and vote.

"If you abstain from voting, you will open the doors of Castille to Marlene Farrugia and Simon Busuttil."

"It is your duty to convince everyone to go out and vote for all PL candidates."

"Keep walking with me, hand in hand, down the rest of this road. For all those who will vote for us for the first time I say welcome to the family, welcome to the movement. This is the movement for all Malta. For all those who have always voted PL, lets send a patriotic message, one of love, that for this movement Malta always comes first and before everything else."

"After nearly nine years as PL Leader and four years as your Prime Minister, I tell you that I am satisfied with the work we have done together. We have made mistakes but we did a lot of good. I carry the responsibility of the bad as leader. On Saturday I put myself at the disposition of the people. If the people decides that what we have done is enough then I will bow my head and leave.

"This might be the last time I have to thank you for your trust, your love. It's been an honour to serve. But if the people decides that we will not stop here, then I will continue serving this country, serving you. I will be there on the forefront to defend the country, to defend each and every one of you, to push and pull and drag our country up to the top as I want Malta to be envy of the world."

"For the youths, for the pensioners, for families, for businesses, for civil liberties, for the gozitans, for our children it will be 'l-Aqwa Zmien' as the best time for our country is yet to come."

PL Deputy Leader Chris Cardona was the first to speak.

“We are ready to again face the peoples justice. I am optimistic that the people will send a strong signal of trust, of love and appreciation for Joseph Muscat.”

“This campaign showed the difference between the parties, showing the ambition of this party compared with the politics of hatred by the PN.”

“We left them breathless, how can they not be negative? What do you expect them to say about the economic benefits we have created, about low unemployment, on social progress and on civil liberties? With the PL in government, things can only get better as the best time for our country is yet to come”

He mentioned the Playmobil investment yesterday, to which the independent media was not invited. He did not mention accusations levelled at the company for employing people in precarious conditions. He also mentioned other investments announced during the campaign.

More than breaking the financial services, we will continue building on it, and on every other economic sector, including the manufacturing sector which, Cowboy Austin Gatt had said would finish. We brought in the largest manufacturing investment ever seen by this country. We brought in Crane Currency that will open in Hal Far.

He said that people cannot trust Simon Busuttil "ask the DB group about the false invoices."

"We are the honest party, the party of love. My appeal to you is continue trusting us, as behind us, there is Joseph Muscat. Do not stop believing in Prime Minister Muscat. I tell you this from my heart, I tie my political career to him. On behalf of my Cabinet colleagues, I say thankyou for the opportunity to serve the country."

He said that the Prime Minister changed the country from a normal one to a special country which is the envy of everyone.

"Yes this is an election that will determine who will lead the country in the coming years. The Prime Minister Joseph Muscat his cabinet which brought a surplus, jobs, investment and prosperity, or Simon Busuttil with his cabinet made up of Marlene Farrugia, Salvu Mallia, Josie Muscat, David Thake, Claudette Buttigieg, and Beppe Fenech Adami. On Saturday, we decide whether we will continue living the Maltese dream under Joseph Muscat, or wake up to Simon Busuttil. This is the choice we face."

"This is the choice that will lead to another win for this movement. This is the choice that will confirm Joseph Muscat as the Prime Minister of Malta. On Saturday lets be the first to go and vote, to vote for all the PL candidates."

PL Deputy Prime Minister Louis Grech was next to speak, in what could be his last major political speech given that he is not contesting these elections.

He said that throughout the campaign, "you met us in the squares, in the towns and villages, giving us courage and trust so that with determination we can continue our journey in favour of our country. The last push remains."

"Over the past four years, our adversaries tried to demolirise and intimidate us. They tried to throw doubts. They have continually had a strategy creating extra tension in our country, but after every storm the party has always emerged stronger, more unified and determined."

He urged people to again give the PL a mandate to govern.

"Over the past four years, our adversaries tried to demolirise and intimidate us. They tried to throw doubts. They have continually had a strategy creating extra tension in our country, but after every storm the party has always emerged stronger, more unified and determined."

He said that the PL has made mistakes and has disappointed some, "but when weighing everything, one clearly sees the weight towards the good we have done."

"We don't preach that only we have the credentials of what is good and bad, what is in the interest of the people or not. It is you the people who define these things."

He spoke of principles which define the movement. "For all those who have doubts when it comes to vote, should ask themselves if there is less unemployment, if national debt reduced, if there was a surplus, if businesses are doing better, if the PL have made a better difference in the lives of many, etc. If these answers are yet, then I believe you will continue to trust this movement to lead the country for the coming five years."

"It was always a PL government who fought against inequalities."

"We as a movement remain relevant as we implemented what we pledged. This movement is and will remain a catalyst for change, one that will continue to create good, despite the false accusations made by the opposition. The people will again believe us, not only because the Opposition is confused and destructive, or that they do not have a strategy, but because they believe the PL has a vision to meed the future challenges."

"I believe that at the end of the day, the people irrespective of their colour, blue or red, have the same dreams, the same pains. It is the PL who has the courage and the aim to make a jump for a more united politics, with less hatred. If you truly want to choose Malta, you must choose those who have the best vision and strategy to lead the country forward. If you want Malta to be stronger, to move forward, the choice is obvious, to again elect a PL government led by Joseph Muscat."

He said that the PL wants to keep expanding the economy, to invest more in healthcare and education. "We need to strengthen work in Gozo, and continue working for the elderly and persons with disability."

He said that the PL will continue to fight poverty. We still have a lot to do to keep developing the country without prejudice.

He said that it was a privilege for him to work alongside the Prime Minister as well as cabinet. "The biggest privilege for me was that you gave me the opportunity to represent you. Friends if on Saturday to trust us again, we will increase our energy to continue going forward with the momentum we have."
