Scicluna writes to PANA committee, says FIAU terminations ‘according to law’

Finance Minister Edward Scicluna has written to the chairman of the PANA committee to inform him that the termination of work for two employees at the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit was “according to law”.

He was reacting to a letter he received from the PANA chairman Werner Langen, who questioned the termination of employment of two officials of the anti money laundering agency. PANA is investigating the Panama Papers and money laundering in the European Union.

In his letter, Langen said that Charles Cronin and Jonathan Ferris were dismissed without justification a few days after the last election.

In reply, Scicluna said that the termination of the employment was carried out during the probationary period according to law. He said that the FIAu has always worked in an appropriate manner. The FIAU board, he added, has taken management decisions in an autonomous manner and without any external interference.
