Nature Trust Malta today released Luca, a five-year-old loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), back into the sea.

“He was brought in with a hook embedded in its throat and line coming out from its rear on 30 September 2016 in Qawra.

The hook was removed by veterinary surgeon Dr Anthony Gruppetta while the line passed naturally.  Following medication and treatment Luca regained his appetite and started eating normally.  After observation, Luca was cleared by Dr Gruppetta for the release today at Hondoq ir-Rummien, Gozo.”

Nature Trust – FEE Malta thanked all its volunteers, the Environment and Resources Authority and the Environment Ministry for their support and appealed to the public to contact the organisation on 9999 9505 if one comes across a turtle in difficulty.

The organisation is also planning to relaunch its adoption campaign in order to raise funds for medication, equipment, food, etc.
