Saturday, 29 July 2017, 11:18 Last update: about 8 years ago

The Siggiewi local council has launched a petition against an 80-residence development by the Housing Authority in the locality, found on Triq it-Tabib Nikol Zammit, Triq l-Imdina and Triq Dun Manwel Zammit.

"The council is not against projects which have a social scope, however is objecting to this massive development due to its density, and the problems it would create in the central town zone. The development includes 80 residences - which includes sheltered housing units and a number of other facilities."

"This large development will also cause a number of issues related to planning, the environment, parking, traffic, infrastructure and cleanliness."

The council, as well as residents had put forward their objections to the planning application which was approved back in 2013.

The council argued that such projects should occur on adequate sites. "This project, should be reconsidered, and the councl has made a number of requests to government to again consider it, with the aim of such public land being put to better use."

Siggiewi Mayor Alessia Psaila Zammit said that the council took the decision to launch a petition as work on the site has begun, and the council has again received complaints from Siggiewi residents who are worried about the massive development and its effects.

The council again reiterated that they are not against social projects, but appealed to government not to create projects which will create other problems.

The petition asks the authorities to revise the development and assure that the project fits in with te area, with facilities which would benefit the community, while leaving more open space which the community could have access to.
