An Advisory Council for Gender Equality is going to be set up in the coming months by the Ministry for European Affairs and Equality, with the aim to continue promoting equality between genders in every area of society.

According to a press release sent by the Ministry, Minister for European Affairs and Equality Helena Dalli explained that the council will consist of representatives from NGOs, political parties and civil society. The representatives will "have the opportunity to participate directly in the execution of government polices and reforms of the present legislation"in relation to gender equality.

Dalli announced this initiative during a visit to the National Council of Women. According to the press release, the initiative was welcomed by the President of the council, Mary Gaerty, who said that organisations such as this would like more participation in Governmental work.

Dalli stressed that the Government will be moving towards the implementation of gender equality planning when deciding on policies and projects, in addition to equity assessments.

She added that amendments for more family friendly and pro-equality labour laws will be put forward to Parliament, emphasising the concept of equal pay for equal work.
