Malta’s high-profile football player Rachel Cuschieri has joined RSC Anderlecht Dames ’71 in Belgium’s top-flight women’s “Super League”.

Cuschieri has been playing professional women’s football with Apollon Limassol FC ladies in Cyprus since 2014 and her “dream” has always been that of playing in a high level women’s league at professional level.

Speaking to The Malta Independent from Brussels, Cuschieri said: “I’m loving it here, it’s a completely different level to Cyprus!  Training is so professional and at a high level.  The club really treats us players so well here.  I’m living a dream.  RSC Anderlecht Dames ’71 are top professionals.  I have never experienced this type of treatment or style of training.  Very happy to be in Belgium and to play for this great team.

Cuschieri has been training with the Brussels ladies outfit since 24 July and signed a one-year contract with “Les Mauves” (the Purples) today.

The 25-year-old became the first local woman footballer to turn professional when in 2014 she signed with Cyprus outfit Apollon Limassol FC Ladies.

A Malta international regular since her teens, the San Gwann academy product began her senior career with Birkirkara, where she won three league titles amid an array of honours.  She finished as the club’s top scorer in seven seasons running and landed Malta’s female Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012.
