English language student ends up in court for attacking police officers in Paceville

A 22-year-old Turkish man who came to Malta to study English was sentenced to a six-month prison sentence suspended to two years after attacking police officers in Paceville.

Police inspector Nicolair Sant explained how at around 1am Tuesday morning, Kemal Burak Ozevci attacked the police officers who were on duty. The accused was also charged with threatening the officers and for being drunk in public. He was also charged with consuming alcohol in a prohibited area.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. Defence lawyer Joe Ellis said that the young man was very sorry for what he did and wanted to apologise for being drunk.

The magistrate sentenced the man to a six month prison sentence suspended to two years. He was also ordered to pay a fine of €4,060. The fine is to be paid within a period of one year.
