A 22-year-old man who was found to be in possession of drugs was granted bail after pleading not guilty to the charges.
Adrian Zammit, who lives in a garage in San Gwann, appeared before magistrate Doreen Clarke this morning facing charges related to the possession of a cannabis plant. Police inspector Gabriel Micallef explained that the amount found, more than 250 grams, showed that the drugs were not intended for his personal use. The police also found €600 in cash at the accused’s residence.
Zammit also stood charged with being in possession of cocaine and for breaching the conditions of a suspended sentence. The court also heard how the man drove a car, an MG, without being covered with the necessary road insurance and licence.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. Defence lawyer Franco Debono made a request for bail.
Inspector Micallef said that his only concern was that the accused lived in a garage. He did not, however object to the request for bail. Lawyer Franco Debono argued that this is where the accused resided and should not make a difference to the prosecution, be it a villa or a garage.
The young man was granted bail and ordered to pay a deposit of €2,000 together with a personal guarantee of €10,000. The court also ordered the man to report at the St Julian's police station twice a week.
