Minister for Tourism Konrad Mizzi presided over an event during which the Malta Freeport Corporation granted an extension to the licence and lease of the Malta Freeport Terminals (the operator) for an additional 30 years as stipulated in the concession agreement following the fulfilment of the original agreement conditions.

In the same event, various new community initiatives were also announced, including a green boundary project as part of the corporate social responsibility programme of the company for the community of Birżebbuġa.

During the signing ceremony, Minister Mizzi highlighted that this extension was being granted to MFT in accordance with license extension conditions as stipulated in the first and second amendments to the Licence Agreement of 2008 and 2011, on the original licence agreement that was entered into in 2004.

The said amendments to the original licence agreement of 2008 provide for an automatic extension of the licence to MFT for an additional 30 years once the company fulfilled its investment obligations stipulated in the agreement.

In the same event, Malta Freeport Terminals announced their commitment to support the Birżebbuġa community through a number of new initiatives as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.

One of the initiatives entails an embellishment project and creating a green belt around the current perimeter of the Freeport.

These new community initiatives will be over and above the contractual Corporate Social Responsibility commitments of MFT.
