Suspended sentence for Irish duo who admitted to drunken hotel brawl

Sunday, 27 August 2017, 15:33 Last update: about 8 years ago

Two Irish men who traded blows while drunk but made up soon after were today handed a suspended sentence.

Magistrate Josette Demicoli heard how Darren Boylan, 26, and Matthew Duggan, 37, came to Malta to attend a friend’s wedding.

The argument took place at the hotel they were staying at.

The court was told that the two had made peace and there were no hard feeling between them. But according to TVM, one of the men bit off part of one of the other man’s ear during the fight.

They were each handed a two-year prison term, which was suspended for four years.

The magistrate warned the men that a suspended sentence is effective in all EU member states and the fact that they were flying out today did not mean that they were going scot free.

Lawyers Arthur Azzopardi and Melvin Mifsud appeared for Boylan. Lawyer Josette Sultana was legal aid for Duggan. Inspector Godwin Scerri prosecuted.
