VAT refund on equipment purchased for persons with disabilities

Wednesday, 30 August 2017, 17:12 Last update: about 8 years ago

People with disabilities will now be able to claim back a refund on equipment expenses under a new scheme launched by Finance Minister Edward Scicluna today.

Addressing members of the press at a conference, Scicluna described how severely disabled people will be able to claim their VAT refund on equipment valued up to €12,000. Eligibility for refunds varies depending on the degree to which a person is disabled. Those who have a level two disability are entitled to a VAT refund of equipment purchased worth up to €8,000, while those with a level three disability are entitled to refunds on purchases up to €4,000.

While addressing the press, Scicluna explained that no specific equipment is targeted, but a wide array such as breathing aides and guide dogs are included.

Scicluna said that this move will act as an incentive for persons with disabilities, such as the trust fund scheme and a minimum wage for all those who’s condition prevents them from working.
