Market Surveillance Directorate withdraws unsafe toys from the market

Tuesday, 12 September 2017, 12:29 Last update: about 8 years ago

The Market Surveillance Directorate within the Technical Regulations Division of the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) has withdrawn four toys from the local market. These were found to be dangerous as small parts can be easily detached from the toys, which may be swallowed by children. Moreover, three out of these four toys have a loop which when stretched extends to a length that can circle around the neck of the child causing a risk of strangulation.

This has led to the Directorate to take the necessary precautions in order to ensure the withdrawal of such products from the local market. The list of non-compliant toys can be found below:

-          Elastic “Puffer Caterpillar with Light” with model number TY3633. The eyes and the ball with light are two small parts among others, which can be easily detached from this toy. Besides, the head of this toy consists of a loop which when stretched extends to a length that can circle around the neck of a child (Refer to Figure 1).

-          Elastic ball with brand name ECLT, model number 6582, manufactured in China. The toy consists of small parts that can be easily detached and a loop which when stretched extends to a length that can circle around the neck of a child (Refer to Figure 2).

-          Elastic “Puffer Ball”, manufactured in China. The toy consists of small parts that can be easily detached, and has a loop which when stretched extends to a length that can circle around the neck of a child (Refer to Figure 3).

-          Green and purple foam ball with model number 4706015, manufactured in China, which changes colour when touched. This ball can be easily torn apart, consequently generating small parts of foam, which can be easily swallowed by a child (Refer to Figure 4).

All of the above toys are available in various colours.

Consumers who had bought any of the above-mentioned toys should immediately refrain from using them and return these toys to the outlet from where they were purchased.

The Directorate wishes to remind the manufacturers and importers to always put on the market products that are safe. In addition, anyone responsible for placing their products on the market shall ensure that they are in line with the EU law.
