Reading in harmony

Wednesday, 20 September 2017, 10:25 Last update: about 8 years ago

Summer is almost over and everyone is ready for the beginning of the next scholastic year. Southern Comfort, within Sagra Familja and which is located Fuq San Pawl in Cospicua, is an organisation which helps children to do their homework after school hours from 3 to 4.30pm free of charge. These sessions will be held every Monday and Thursday from Monday, 2 October. In addition, Southern Comfort also embraces children in drama lessons and organises cultural and educational outings throughout the year.

Everyone realises the importance of reading and Southern Comfort works to instill a reading culture in the local community. For this purpose, on 3 July, an annual concert was held in St George's Band club Cospicua. The concert was titled, Reading in harmony and linked three organisations together: Southern Comfort, St George's Band club and Cospicua's primary school which all benefit from funds given by Spiro Mizzi Foundation which is managed by Chev. Maurice Mizzi.

The concert started with the reading of poems by children who attend Cospicua's primary school and participate in Lego activities held after school hours. The concert continued with a symphonic fairytale Peter and the Wolf, under the direction of Mro Etienne Spiteri. This fairytale, which was narrated by the children who attend Southern Comfort, was accompanied by the choreography of Lookstar Dancers under the direction of Clarise Briffa, Shaznay Graham and Gabriella Stagno Piscopo. The concert ended with a speech by Cospicua's archpriest Fr Anton Cassar during which he presented a commemorative plaque to the orchestra and a reading book to all the children who participated in the event so as to promote reading.

The organisers and the teachers who are in charge of Southern Comfort are inviting the residents of Cospicua and people who live nearby to call on 9911 7618 for more information or to place a reservation for their children to attend the sessions.
