A Memorandum of Understanding regarding a pilot project to use Blockchain to issue educational diplomas and certificates has been signed.

This agreement was signed by the Education Ministry's Permanent Secretary Francis Fabri and the international company known as Learning Machine.

This is Malta's first government initiative regarding Blockchain technology, and is part of government's vision to use this technology to increase efficiency and transparency on a number of issues and public sector services.

The Blockchain certificate project has important implications in the context of the education ministry, both from an educational aspect, as well as part of a contribution to the employment sector, a government statement read.

"Malta is the first country that will give notarised certificates on Blockchain". Through this agreement, The Education Minister believes that if the technology is used well, it could contribute to a more inclusive education. Blockchain grants the opportunity for every citizen to become the owner of his or her educational credentials.

Through the initiative, MCAST NCFHE and ITS will participate in the pilot project.
