GWU says Daphne rally turned into partisan event

Monday, 23 October 2017, 14:39 Last update: about 7 years ago

The General Workers Union today condemned the way the rally organised in Valletta on Sunday to call for justice following the killing of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was turned into a partisan political event. An opportunity to unite the country was lost, the GWU said in a statement.

The union said it had accepted an invitation to take part because it understood that at this particular moment the country needed to put aside its political division and to say that freedom of expression should be respected.

In spite of all the assurances given, the demonstration turned into a political attack, the union said. This showed lack of respect to all those who genuinely accepted the invitation because they believe in national unity.
