The tender issued for the redevelopment of Marfa Palace has received only one bid and is being evaluated by three independent architects. The bid will pass on to the Lands Authority for assessment, information released in parliament revealed.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Ian Borg said that the bid includes the valuation as well as the actual proposals for the palace's use. Borg was replying to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Clayton Bartolo.
The expression of interest was released by the government on October 2013 and six expressions were received. However, when a formal request was made the government only received one bid. The bid was made by Exclusivity Malta Ltd, who intends to transform it into a boutique hotel.
The Palace was built by the Order of St John in 1716. In the 19th century, the battery was converted into the Marfa Palace Hotel. It was later used as a retreat house and summer residence for the MSSP community which runs St Joseph Home of Santa Venera. It also served as a police station.
The building was practically abandoned in the 90s.
