Gozo Minister unveils plans for new law courts

Friday, 17 November 2017, 19:43 Last update: about 7 years ago

Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana has unveiled plans for the new law courts in Gozo. The site earmarked for the project lies at the periphery of Rabat and Xewkija following geological studies. Previous studies had shown that other alternative sites were too dangerous as the land was too weak for development.

Caruana said that the final decision on the site will be taken after a month of public consultation which was launched today. If the project is given the green light, it will cost around €5.5 million.

Architect Mario Cordina from the Gozo Ministry explained that the development was originally earmarked for a parking area in Triq Gorg Borg Olivier in Rabat. It was later established that the ground is not strong enough for a project which will involve five storeys. Later the Ministry embarked on a project to find an alternative site with the least impact on the environment.

The courts will sit on an area of 3,800 square metres. The building will include five storeys for the halls with an underground parking for 120 metres.
