Jonathan Galea covered himself with glory last weekend when he set a new world record at the Hal Far raceway during the finals of the Quarter Mile.

A good number of drivers took part in the event.

Galea drove Antoine Schembri's Dragster in 6.491 seconds recording a speed of 202.5 mph with a 4 cylinder Toyota engine.

Nathan Bartolo also set a new European record as he drove his Mazda RX7 in 6.89 seconds becoming the first with a rotary engine to run the distance in less than seven seconds in Europe.

Motorcycle rider Glenn Borg beat the national record in two classes - the Top Fuel Bike and Open Class - as he drove his bike turbo in 6.76 seconds with a speed of 201 mph, a time which placed him 6th in Europe.

There were others who improved their timings. One of them was Chantelle Zammit who confirmed that she is the fastest female driver in Malta.

Also taking part were Duncan Micallef, Franklyn Borg and Simon Giordmaina who have just concluded their European adventure with Micallef being declared Europe's No. 1 in the Top Fuel Dragster Class.

Franklyn Borg and Simon Giordmaina finished third in Europe with the motor bike Hyabusa.

The motorsport enthusiasts' attention now turns to the Bugibba Square where tomorrow, from 8am onwards, members of the Island Car Club will be displaying their cars. During the event, members of the public can enjoy the cars and chat with their owners and drivers.
