Emma and Luca most common baby names of 2017, for third year in a row

Emma and Luca are the most common baby names of 2017, for the third year in a row, according to information tabled in parliament this morning.

57 girls were named Emma and 54 boys were named Luca this year, the data reveals. Ella and Amy were the second and third most popular names (with 45 and 41 babies being given those names respectively.) Ben and Liam were the second and third most popular names for boys (with 42 and 40 being given those names respectively.)

Last year, Emma and Luca were also the most popular baby names, with 57 and 64 babies being given those names. 

In 2015, the names also ranked as the most popular, with 45 girls being named Emma, and 55 baby boys named Luca.

When comparing this year's most popular baby names to last year's, the names Leah and Jake have been replaced by the names Amy and Ben in popularity.
