Uchenna Anyanwu, coach of the Pembroke Athleta football team, today was sentenced to a year's jail term suspended for two years and fined €1,000 after being found guilty of attempting to bribe two Mosta FC players.
Anyanwu, 31 was found guilty of having, in January and February last year, offered a reward to the Mosta players if his team was allowed to win a match.
Yesterday, European football body UEFA banned two Malta under-21 football players for match-fixing offences and suspended four others in relation to two European qualifying matches played less than two years ago.
The Nationalist Party urged the government to move a draft bill on tackling corruption in sport, adding that this week’s developments showed how urgent this was.
