Mgarr man released on bail after pleading not guilty to domestic violence charges

A man who was arraigned on domestic violence charges was this morning released on bail.

The 36-year-old part-time taxi driver from Mgarr was morning charged with assaulting his partner and threatening her with a knife.

Before Magistrate Monica Vella, the man, who cannot be named by order of the court, was also accused of grievously injuring the woman, causing her to fear violence against her or close family members and relapsing. The woman appeared in court with bruises on her face.

Legal aid lawyer Benjamin Valenzia told the court that the couple had argued about money, adding that there had been long-standing financial difficulties.

The accused was granted bail against a deposit of €500. The court also issued a protection order in favour of the woman.

Inspector Charlotte Curmi prosecuted. Lawyer Alfred Abela appeared parte civile for the woman
