1,589 non-fatal workplace accidents in second half of 2017

1,589 persons were involved in non-fatal workplace accidents in the second half of 2017, a decrease of 19 accidents when compared to the corresponding period in 2016.

"Administrative records show that 1,589 persons were involved non-fatal accidents at work in the last six months of 2017.  The majority of these non-fatal accidents occurred in manufacturing (17.3%). 15.3% of the accidents occurred in construction."

In total, 2017 saw 3,182 non-fatal workplace accidents.

"The largest share of accidents at work during second half of the year involved persons working in elementary occupations followed by craft and related trades workers. When compared to the corresponding period in 2016, the number of accidents at work decreased across all occupations except for persons working as technicians and associate professionals and in elementary occupations

Almost half (46.7%) of the injuries at work, in the 2nd half of 2017, affected the upper extremities of the body, such as the fingers and hands.

In the second half of 2017, nearly 35% of the accidents at work took place in enterprises with more than 500 employees.

Between July and December 2017, the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) did not report any fatal accident at work. There were three fatalities at work in the corresponding period of 2016
