Viola Club Malta celebrates its 50th anniversary

Tuesday, 13 February 2018, 22:25 Last update: about 7 years ago
The Viola Club Malta is this year celebrating the 50th anniversary since its inception, and is organising a number of activities for all members of the Viola Club Malta and all supporters of ACF Fiorentina to commemorate the event.

Club’s history

The first steps to form a maltese supporters' club of A.C.F. FIORENTINA started during 1967.
The late Mr. Carmelo Micallef from Vittoriosa met Mr. John Farrugia from Kalkara and having known that in Florence, groups of Fiorentina supporters were being organised as VIOLA CLUBS, decided to form such a club in Malta. After Farrugia dropped out of it, Micallef met Mr. Joseph M. Saliba from Marsa.

Saliba knew Mr. Joseph Calleja from Hamrun as a very staunch supporter of Fiorentina. Later on Micallef, Saliba and Calleja met Mr. Alexander Damato from Tarxien, whose mother is from Florence and for this main reason Damato always supported Fiorentina. The four co-founders followed the statute of the Centro Coordinamento Viola Clubs and one of the rules says that a Viola Club can be formed if there are at least twenty one supporters.
Therefore, an advert was published in the local newspapers and a meeting was held at the Anglo-Maltese Club in Merchants Street in Valletta for all supporters of Fiorentina. More than thirty supporters were present and this encouraged the co-founders who were authorised by all those present to continue the organisation of the club. In fact, Carmelo Micallef was the President, Joseph M. Saliba the Secretary, Joseph Calleja the Treasurer and Alexander Damato was a member of this board.
On the 20th May, 1968 the Viola Club Malta was constituted and the Public Notary Act was signed by Micallef and Saliba, as President and Secretary of the Club. The Notary was the late Dr. Joseph Cachia.
After exactly 50 years, the Viola Club Malta still exists and various activities will be organiaed to celebrate this Anniversary.
