PN leader commits party to strong opposition to abortion

Nationalist Party leader Adrian Delia committed the party to a strong opposition to abortion.

Speaking in St Paul's Bay, Dr Delia said the party will always protect the child in the womb. When asked for their opinion on abortion, all PN MPs had unanimously declared they were totally against abortion. PN will always be in favour of measures that protect life right from its beginning,m that is in the womb.

If the Labour Party says it is in favour of rights, the PN will always say it is in favour of life right from the beginning.

Parliament is discussing a Bill against domestic violence. PN is against domestic violence but the existing law defines possible victims of domestic violence including the child in the womb.

But the government is proposing, in the bill under discussion, removing the previous definition of a child in the womb and proposing speaking generically about 'descendants'. PN is asking why is this change being made.

Dr Delia asked Prime Minister Muscat for the reasons behind this change, when the child in the womb is the most vulnerable of possible victims of domestic violence.

In a reaction, the Labour Party said Dr Delia is creating an issue where there is none.

Dr Delia's stand on abortuion, however, was not the main theme of the meeting. The real subject was the situation inside the St Paul's Bay local council which had finally been unblocked last week by the electiion of new mayor Ann Fenech. The first three speakers, in fact, and even Dr Delia, spoke at length about the issue.

The new mayor spoke first, in a very emotional voice, and rejoiced that the long-drawn out dispute is now over. She saluted her predecessor, Graziella Galea, who had to resign because of obstructiions and ciommitted her council to continuing Ms Galea's commitments

Ms Galea said her council had begun with a €0.5 million deficit and made its way to profitability, but envy had overcome all reason. Many allegations were made in her regard, but none of them was substantiated. The worst was to come when her mother had a nine-hour operation on the day when the worst allegations were made and Minister Owen Bonnici ordered an investigation into her term of office. He had also offered the previous (PL) mayor a post despite this person having made 200 direct orders. Ms Galea also mentioned PL councillor Alfred Grima who, she said, always wanted to become mayor.

She urged completion of works planned during her term such as more roads and the playing field.

MEP Roberta Metsola thanked Ms Galea who was a victim of the MLP in the 1980s, along with her father, former minister Censu Galea. The Nationalist Party wants to be the party for everyone while Joseph Muscat wants to help someone.

In Slovakia, following the murder of a journalist and his girlfriend, ministers resigned and now even the prime minister has resigned: in Malta we do the opposite and it is business as usual.

When she went on Xarabank last week, she spoke of the 400 people who are living in garages and was booed for her efforts.

Dr Delia began his speech by explaining why the party had gone to hold a meeting in St Paul's Bay when it had already held one before. The issue in St Paul's Bay was to ensure that the people's will be obeyed. The party went to court to get this principle endorsed and won. Dr Delia thanked MEP Metsola and said the party will always support her.

The party intends to listen to the people and to defend the people. That is why the party decided as it did on the former MPs' pension issue. It was true there were some anomalies in this regard but then the party considered the oplight of so many elderly people who are on the verge of poverty. The party is in a minority in Parliament but it can still be effective  as it was in the case of the issue at St Paul's Bay,

Another issue regards the issuing of ID Cards and the granting of Maltese citizenship. For 18 months the party has been demanding information from Julia Farrugia and from the prime minister but to no avail. The giovernment even wants to control how elections are held. The party has already gone to court on this issue and will soon lodge another protest.

In St Paul's Bay the party forced the government to respect the people's choice. It did not have a partisan intention behind its actions. The party will be the people's defender as it was on the Park tal-Majistral, on Buleben, etc.
